What’s this video all about?

This was a different practice for my U14 boys team. Instead of the run of the mill training session, this time I thought it would be worth while having them learn and educate each other about the other things that happen around soccer that on any given day they’re not really thinking about. Topics such as A ‘Player Concussion’ | A ‘Playing Time’ issue | What goes into a proper ‘Warm-Up’ | Why taking ‘Drugs’ is bad for soccer | A ‘Tooth being knocked out’ during a game | ‘Parent Coaching’ from the sideline.

Each group consisted of roughly 6/7 people. The players had 5 minutes to come up with a way of demonstrating the importance of whatever their topic was.As the coach, I helped them with ideas how they could get the messages across, i.e. a presentation, a demonstration, someone talking and a skit etc. After I led them to an idea using ‘guided discovery’, the players ideas on what/how to do it were completely their own.

Coach Vs Parent: A ‘Playing Time’ Perspective
In this example, this group were set to demonstrate a good and bad example of how a coach should deal with a parent not being very happy about their son getting little play time.

The Message:
Always, refrain from having 1 on 1 conversations with parents around or during a game. If the conversation is about playing time, as a coach you should always set the 24hr period. Whenever a parent/s are unhappy about anything regarding the team, you as a coach, the players, their son, the weather, anything, you have to set the 24 hour period. This gives everyone the chance to cool off and reflect on what they want to say. 9 times out of 10, the conversation I have had after the 24hrs, has been completely civilised. This is the best time to straighten out the problems. It really works. Setting the 24hr period should be done at the start of your season. This way, as a coach you will have no confrontations throughout your season.

Bottom Line
Set the 24-Hr period at the start of the season. You as the coach will give all the time to the parent in need to talk when the alloted time is over. This will work 9 times out of 10.

A nice goal from the US National Team Goalkeeper Tim Howard who becomes the 4th goalkeeper to score in the English Premier League.
